Finding Your Skills

You may think you don’t have the skills Employers are seeking, but the facts are you've been building these skills for years. You have gained skills through past jobs, volunteering, sports, hobbies, and more. Employers often classify skills under three headings:

  • Self-Management Skills - Skills that describe your work habits; also called soft skills
  • Transferable Skills - Skills you have from past jobs; volunteering, hobbies and life experience
  • Job Related/Technical Skills- Skills specific to a job learned through education training, and experience.

For additional examples of skills that fall in the above categories, refer to our Skill Reference Sheet. If you need help determining your skills, visit the great assessment tools available at CareerOnestop

Now that you have a better idea of the skills you have, it's time to use them to help get the job you really want!
